Super Butcher Bovaer Statement
At Super Butcher, we stay informed about innovations like Bovaer and the discussions surrounding its use in some Australian feedlots.
What is Bovaer?
Bovaer is a feed additive designed to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle. It works by inhibiting a specific enzyme in the rumen responsible for methane production. This innovative solution has been trialled in Australian grain-fed supply chains, where it demonstrated significant methane reduction without affecting important animal performance metrics, such as daily intake and overall animal nutrition.
These trials have led some supply chains to adopt Bovaer as part of their sustainability strategies, helping them achieve ambitious climate goals and reduce their carbon footprint.
Is Bovaer Safe?
Extensive rigorous safety assessments have confirmed the safety of Bovaer’s active ingredient when used as an animal feed supplement. Despite some public concerns, there is no scientific evidence to suggest safety issues, and regulatory authorities have found no risks at the levels used in cattle feed.

Greenham’s Commitment to Sustainability
Greenham, one of our key suppliers and the producer of renowned brands like Bass Strait, Cape Grim, and Vintage Beef, does not include Bovaer in their supply chain. Their operations primarily focus on grass-fed beef systems, which function differently and are not compatible with this type of supplementation. Similarly, their grain-fed systems do not currently use Bovaer, and there are no plans to adopt it.
Instead, Greenham prioritises sustainability through their Grass-Fed Sustainability Standard. This program highlights on-farm practices that generate measurable ecological, social, and economic benefits. By collaborating closely with their producers, they implement methods such as rotational grazing and biodiversity enhancement. These initiatives not only enhance ecological outcomes but also support carbon sequestration, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
The Never Ever Beef Program
Greenham also leads the Never Ever Beef Program, a premium assurance standard established in 2012 to meet growing demand for traceable, natural grass-fed beef. Key attributes of this program include:
- 100% Grass Fed & Finished
- Free Range
- Lifetime Traceable
- Lifetime Antibiotic-Free
- GMO-Free
- Bovaer-Free
- No Added Hormones
- Certified Humane
These initiatives highlight Greenham’s dedication to sustainability, animal welfare, and high-quality beef production.
